This year began with the maiden edition of the Helmbridge
Soccer and Quiz Competition (HSQC) This was a six week contest organized for
senior secondary school students from neighbouring schools with the aim of
promoting leadership and cultural values as well as introducing new boys to the
activities of the centre.
They were grouped into four teams with the captains being
regular responsible members of the Helmbridge Senior Club. The teams were Rockies,
Andes, Himalayas and Alps which stand for the great fold mountain ranges in
different continents. The competition was highly competitive consisting of both
a soccer league and a cultural quiz contest going on simultaneously. The
matches were played on Saturday afternoons during the period of the Helmbridge
Senior Club, beginning with a cultural quiz game and followed up by a soccer
match against the same team both in a round robbing league format with league
tables updated each week.
The quiz covered a wide range of cultural topics such a
history, current affairs, government, sports, literature, IT.... etc. It was a good opportunity to broaden the
horizon of these students who often tend to restrict their reading to just their
school curriculum and thus remain very ignorant about the world around them.
At the end of the competition , Rockies emerged as the
overall champions having the best average points of the soccer and quiz
contest. They were also the best quiz team and their captain, Jude Obi, an SS3
student of Eric Moore High school got most of the individual prizes including
the best quiz player and the highest goal scorer. Himalayas emerged as the
soccer champions. The winning teams and individual players were giving
attractive prizes at the end of the contest.
This maiden competition proved to be a success with about 30
new boys competing. They came from schools such as May Day college, Eric Moore High school,
Command Secondary School, Fountain Heights, Penny International
College.....etc. We hope to continue this competition as an annual event of the
Helmbridge Senior Club along with the already well established traditional
Inter-School Science challenge. |
